UFN 14 Preview

205 lbs. – Anderson Silva [NR] vs. James Irvin [21]

Anderson Silva (21-4) is the best striker in MMA and is arguably the best pound 4 pound fighter on the planet. He is bringing a 7-fight win streak into the cage. His only weakness is his wrestling. That doesn’t matter most of the time because he just uses his knee-strikes for takedown defense. James Irvin (14-4) is a good athlete with KO power. He doesn’t have nearly the array of strikes that Anderson has. The only way Silva loses this fight is if he takes Irvin lightly. Otherwise, he will destroy him with varied punches, knees and kicks.

155 lbs. – Frank Edgar [14] vs. Hermes Franca [23]

Frank Edgar (8-1) is a relentless wrestler with solid boxing skills and a good chin. He has great cardio, heart and desire. He is looking to bounce back from his loss to Gray Maynard [13]. Hermes Franca (18-6) is coming off a 1-year steroid suspension. He has great Jiu-Jitsu and has KO power in his hands. Only one of his 18 victories went to the judges. Hermes also has a ton of heart. I just don’t see how he can take Edgar down. It’s going to come down to boxing skills vs. punching power. The former will win out. Edgar will get the decision victory by picking apart Franca on their feet.

205 lbs. – Brandon Vera [NR] vs. Reese Andy [36]

Brandon Vera (8-2) is a very well rounded fighter. He has very good grappling and great striking. He desperately wants to erase his controversial loss to Fabricio Werdum [7] that happened just last month. Reese Andy (7-1) is great grappler with limited striking skills. Andy needs to get this fight to the mat quickly. He is very strong and will look to smother Vera against the cage. Vera has too many tools to let this fight get out of his control. He will use his reach advantage to land clean, hard strikes. When he gets the KO will depend on how long Andy can keep him smothered.

170 lbs. – Kevin Burns [23] vs. Anthony Johnson [36]

Kevin Burns (6-1) came out of obscurity to submit a blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Roan Carneiro [24], in his octagon debut last month. He has great heart and cardio. Anthony Johnson (5-1) is a very powerful striker with very good wrestling. He is HUGE for 170. His reach is going to be a factor. This is a battle of two of the hottest Welterweight prospects in the UFC. It has a very good chance of being fight of the night. Burns needs to get the fight to the ground. If he doesn’t, Johnson’s reach will be the difference. This is a toss up fight. Both guys are hungry and determined to win. Whoever wins will likely get a top tier opponent in their next match.

HVY – Jake O’Brien [22] vs. Cain Velasquez [42]

Jake O’Brien (10-1) is a very good wrestler who holds a victory over Heath Herring [10]. He is just 23-years-old and has a bright future. Cain Velasquez (3-0) is a 2-time all-american wrestler from Arizona State. He trains at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) and is one of the UFC’s top prospects. The wrestling will most likely be neutralized. If anyone has the advantage there, it is Cain. This fight should come down to who has the better striking. Both guys are young and largely unproven. This is a showcase fight for both guys.

170 lbs. – Brad Blackburn [27] vs. James Giboo

Brad Blackburn (12-9-1) is a well-rounded fighter with explosive striking power. He is also very experienced. James Giboo (11-2) is on a 6-fight win streak. All 11 of his wins have come by stoppage.

170 lbs. – Rory Markham vs. Brodie Farber

Rory Markham (14-4) trains out of Miletich Fighting Systems and is right on the cusp of being ranked. He is the prototypical warrior. He seems to enjoy being hit and has as much heart as anyone in the sport. None of his fights have gone to a decision. He has been stopped 4 times and has stopped 14 out of 14 victims. Brodie Farber (13-3) is on a 6-fight win streak with all 6 wins coming by stoppage.

155 lbs. – Dale Hartt vs. Shannon Gugerty

Dale Hartt (5-0) has stopped all 5 opponents he’s stepped in the cage against. Shannon Gugerty (10-2) is on a 7-fight win streak. Like Hartt, all 10 of his wins have come by stoppage. I don’t know enough about these fighters to judge how the fight will most likely proceed.

185 lbs. – Jesse Taylor vs. CB Dollaway

Jesse Taylor (6-2) made it to the finals of the Ultimate Fighter but was kicked off the show before the finale. He has great cardio and heart along with very good wrestling skills. His main weapon is his ground and pound. CB Dollaway (6-1) took Taylor’s place in the Ultimate Fighter Finale. He lost to Amir Sadolloh. He is a very good wrestler. Whoever puts their opponent on their back will win this fight. If neither can, we will have a brawl.

185 lbs. – Cale Yarbrough vs. Tim Credeur

Cale Yarbrough (0-0) Tim Credeur (9-2)
