  1. Not a huge thing, but it appears you don’t recognize WAMMA champs (Fedor and Aoki… are there others?)

  2. Gutu,

I only recognize the organizations titles. WAMMA holds no credibility for me anyway because a Lightweight Title fight without BJ Penn is ridiculous. As far as I know, Fedor and Aoki are the only 2 WAMMA champions.

  3. I suppose you can do that, but your Penn argument is iffy.
Of course you can have title fights without top guys, you just don’t have to rank the champion highly.

Not long ago I watched a LHW Title fight that didn’t have a top 10 guy in it (Strikeforce). The WAMMA belts try to be more important than they are, but they still seem like something. If you list non-proper mma championships (like K-1 and ADCC) I thought you might list WAMMA.

But this is a very minor quibble. I was more curious than anything. Really, I don’t want WAMMA to succeed.

  4. How can you justify ranking Lesnar ahead of Arlovski and Barnett. Alright he beat two high ranked guys in randy and heath but randy hadn’t fought in like 14 months and heath had already shown his vulnerability against strong wrestlers in the o,brien fight.

  5. Gutu,

Thanks for the inquiry. I hate WAMMA too. They’re just trying to make a quick buck.

I obviously agree that you can have title fights without top guys, but WAMMA is an arbitrary entity claiming to identify the champion of each weightclass. The championships I have listed (like ADCC and K-1, etc.) are bestowed not outside of the ring, but inside of it because one person has conquered the stable of fighters in the given organizatiion. If anyone is going to claim Shinya Aoki as Champion of the Lightweight Class, I will consider it illegitemate until he beats BJ Penn. I have no problem claiming him as DREAM Champion because DREAM is claiming him champion over all of THEIR fighters. If I listed WAMMA champions, then I’d follow a slippery slope leading me to list Joe Schmo’s champion ad nauseum.

  6. PJ,

You make a strong point with the O’Brien comparison but Couture being off for over a year didn’t hurt him when he beat Tim Sylvia…who had just beaten Arlovski twice.

Barnett has been hindered because of his inactivity. His last 6 fights have him beating Pawel Nastula, Yoshida, Monson and Rizzo while losing to Cro Cop and Nogueira. I’ll give him those losses, but beating Pawel, Yoshida, Monson and an over-the-hill Rizzo is not as impressive to me as DOMINATING Couture and Herring.

Im not gonna argue with you if you have Barnett, Arlovski and Lesnar as #3, #4 and #5 respectively. It’s reasonable. Luckily, reason doesn’t count in the ring and Arlovski will get his shot at the #1 spot this month while Lesnar has his showdown with Mir.
